Crown repair around a DuraFlex liner system matters because the crown is the lid that keeps water from running down the outside of the liner. DuraFlex liners are used in both masonry chimneys and factory-built fireplaces, and the crown sitting on top is rarely a DuraFlex product itself. Most Manassas homes with a DuraFlex liner have a poured concrete or precast crown that was built to fit the original flue opening, then adjusted when the liner went in.

The compatibility question is less about the liner and more about the gap between the liner and the crown. Signs Your DuraFlex Crown Repair Is Failing

• Hairline cracks visible from the ground or roof. A crown should shed water. Cracks catch it, and once water sits in a crack, every freeze widens the crack. This is the number-one crown issue we see in Manassas, and it’s the cheapest stage to fix.
• Spalling on the crown surface. Spalling is when the top layer of concrete flakes off in thin sheets. It means water has saturated the crown and is popping the surface. The fix is not a topcoat; it’s rebuilding the affected area and adding a proper slope.
