• The handle spins free or feels loose. The set screw on the damper shaft has worked itself out, or the shaft itself has sheared. Either way, the blade isn’t moving with the handle anymore.
• You can see daylight through the closed damper. A warped blade or a hinge that’s pulled away from the frame leaves a permanent gap. That gap is a 24/7 draft in winter and an open path for rain in summer.
