Signs Your Gelco Flue Liner Replacement Is Failing

Working on a flue liner is not high-tension like garage door springs, but it still belongs in the category of work we tell people not to DIY. The dangerous parts are the height work on a roof and the carbon monoxide consequences of a liner installed with an unnoticed gap or an unsealed joint. You can safely check a few things at the firebox level: look for rust flakes in the ash, and examine the damper and the first few feet of liner with a flashlight. If you see daylight through the liner wall or rust stains on the hearth, stop there.
What you cannot safely do is inspect the full liner from the roof, measure pitch and diameter accurately, or seal the top plate correctly. Those are the steps where a liner replacement gets done wrong, and the mistake doesn’t show up until a CO detector goes off.
