Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

Gelco Chimney Cap Installation: The Manassas Owner’s Guide

We stock and install Gelco-compatible chimney cap installations in Manassas, with most replacements running $285 to $540 installed, and we carry the most common Gelco sizes on the truck for same-visit swaps. The typical discovery comes one of two ways: you see rust staining on the chimney crown from ground level, or a Manassas rainstorm has pushed water past a failed cap into the firebox and the damper area smells like wet ash. Either way, the fix starts with a camera check of the cap and flue top before any price is written.

Which Gelco Models This Applies To

Gelco makes cap assemblies primarily for manufactured and prefab chimneys, including the common 8-inch and 10-inch inner flue diameters, with mesh screen kits and band-mount bases that differ by outer pipe dimension. The compatibility gotcha most Manassas owners run into: measuring the inside flue opening is not enough because Gelco caps seat on the outside pipe diameter, so an 8-inch flue can need a 10-inch or 12-inch cap depending on the outer casing. Look for a small metal tag on the cap skirt or the top of the pipe, and if it is gone, we measure both dimensions before pulling a part. On OEM versus aftermarket: for Gelco applications, we install genuine Gelco caps when the pipe tolerances call for it, and quality aftermarket equivalents where they fit to spec and keep the cost down. Level Two Chimney Manassas is an independent service provider, not a Gelco dealer, and we stock Gelco plus DuraFlex and HeatShield components, so you are not locked into a single label when a matching part serves better.

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

Signs Your Gelco Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
  • Rust streaks down the crown or pipe chase. The cap’s protective coating has failed, and water is now following the metal down instead of being shed outward. On Manassas roofs this often shows up first on the north-facing slope, where dampness lingers.
  • Water in the firebox after rain. If the cap’s mesh or hood has separated, even a light Virginia rain can funnel directly down the flue. You will see a gray puddle or darkened firebrick below the damper.
  • Debris inside the fireplace. A damaged or missing mesh screen lets birds, squirrels, and oak leaves from Historic Old Town’s mature trees drop through. Nests can sit on the smoke shelf for months before a smell gives them away.
  • Chunks of cap bracket or mesh on the roof or ground. High winds and thermal expansion work the fasteners loose, and once one anchor point fails, the cap starts leaning and the rest follow within a season.
  • Flue liner taking on water damage. We find spalling (flaking) clay liner sections during Level 2 camera scans where a cap failed and went unnoticed for two or three winters. The cap is cheap; the liner repair is not.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In Manassas, a Gelco-compatible cap replacement and installation typically runs $285 to $540 installed, with the part and labor split out on a written estimate before we start. What moves the price: roof access difficulty, whether the existing cap is corroded on and needs cutting free, and whether you want standard stainless mesh or an upgraded draft-improving hood. Every install includes a camera look down the top of the flue while we are up there, and a photo record of the new cap seated and secured, part of the documentation you get after the job. The work itself is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something is not right, we make it right.

DIY or Call Us?

An owner can safely check the cap from the ground with binoculars: look for leaning, missing mesh, or rust. That is worth doing. What usually goes wrong with a DIY Gelco swap is not the cap bolts, it is the roof itself: Manassas homes with steep pitches make a ladder-and-drill job turn into a fall risk quickly, and the chimney crown is not a place to learn. If the cap is rust-frozen to the pipe, forcing it can crack the crown or dislodge the top flue section. We carry the sizes, we have the camera, and the estimate is written before any work begins.
